Stay-at-home moms (SAHM) have many daily tasks, but also many find ways to make an income while being a SAHM too. We’ve all come across someone trying to sell us something. Make-up, kitchen ware, health supplements and more. Do you feel pressured or do you get excited to try some of the products they offer?
If you have a friend or family member representing a product in the direct sales or network marketing industry, remember they too are a small business. Moms (and even dads) may be selling a product to help support their family as this industry as a whole has made many millionaires, but more importantly, has kept many parents at home to care for their young children. Yes, it can be annoying to see so many posts about a different product advertised on social media, but it’s no different than the many companies putting massive commercials during your favorite televisions shows.
Corporate Girl to Entrepreneur
I remember the day like it was yesterday when an acquaintance mention they joined a skin care and color cosmetics company and wanted me to take a look at joining too. HA! I remember chuckling out loud because inside I was thinking (selfishly) “I am a Vice President of a Bank with a college degree!”. Then she shared something with me I couldn’t pass up. She said, “what if you could get discounts for you and your two teenage daughters?” Well, that definitely intrigued me!! To save money on our cosmetics and skin care would be a huge benefit with three girls in the household.
So I joined Mary Kay with her and even said to her I would not be “selling” it. What I did instead was have fun girl gatherings with my friends in the evenings. We would sit around the table, have a glass of wine and sample and share the products. Before I knew what I was even doing, I found out I was earning a car. WHAT??? A CAR???? I couldn’t believe when the call came in from the Director about my success. To earn something like a car when I was merely having fun sharing was so different than in my banking world. I honestly can say, this is when the “bug” hit me about this industry I still laugh thinking about the call because it wasn’t a car I would drive. Then my Director explained I could take the cash instead and so I did.
I began helping others with the same thought process and slowly this allowed me to grow into a directorship position. The joy in inspiring, motivating and training is what fuels me. I earned a total of four cars in my five years with Mary Kay. But, I gained so much more with personal development, friends and the desire to set goals that I’ve stayed in this industry now for nearly two decades.
I didn’t end up staying with my first company or my second. I share this story many times during a speaking engagement or a sit down with prospects who want to know about this way to earn income from home. I learned many valuable lessons with my first two companies. First, I don’t like holding parties or leaving the house when my husband comes home from work. I feel it’s almost an oxymoron to what this industry stands for (in my mind). Bringing moms home shouldn’t mean for them to leave when hubby comes home. Secondly, I learned to research the company’s founders and executives before joining a company in direct sales and network marketing. My second choice I didn’t do the research enough about who the corporate executives were. Needless to say, I chose to make another change.
Remember they have a why!
This industry is different than it was when I began many years ago. It’s gotten a bit better to understand and accept. Economic times, social media and people have helped make it better in many ways. It’s a career for those who want to supplement their income, save for vacations or save for retirement. So the next time you want to shut your friend or family member down with what they are trying to sell. Think about the reason behind what they are doing and remember they may need it to put food on their table, shoes on their child’s feet or save for their children’s college. This industry has allowed me to go from my heels to flip-flops which are nice now that we live at the beach!
