I’m amazed how my banking career took off, especially when I started in the dark basement of one of the top US banks in the department that paid the least amount. When my father told my husband (boyfriend at the time) that we needed to figure out something to do as a career, he went into the military. I chose the banking route as that offered me many opportunities. While going through school, I had always done well in math. My mother was an accountant, and I had thought about following in her footsteps. I began working at Sea World and was able to move on to the Cash Control Department, and where my passion for accounting and money began.
Banking Career Choice
When I decided to find a bank to work for I called many in the local area. The last contact I even told the Human Resources Director I would sweep floors and clean bathrooms if she’d hire me. She said my tenacity and persistence is why she hired me. I was 18 years old at the time, and my banking career began. Little did I know just how much this career was such a perfect job for a military spouse during our 2o+ years moving around the world.
When I started in the proof department as an 18 years old teenager fresh out of high school, never dreamt I end up as a Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer many years later. I had finished my finance degree during these years with two small children at home. I worked in various departments primarily in commercial lending to include working at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). I learned so much during my banking days, but the one that sticks out the most is when I was in charge of the new accounts and loan department at the bank on base in Germany. Our military troops were the first called out when the Gulf War began. During these situations, military spouses aren’t sure what to do when their husbands deploy, sometimes in the middle of the night. Handling the banking took on a very different meaning when situations like these happen to a military family
Conquering our Debt
In the latter part of my banking and finance days, I was approached by a Dave Ramsey Trainer to assist them with the growth in our area. I learned so much about how to work with consumers on debt relief, savings growth and investments that we too began working with the envelope system ourselves. We became debt free with everything, but our house back in 2010. Our choices are very frugal now when it comes to spending now because of this experience. Our children even began using a Christmas Club savings account when we started the process. It sure does make things easier (and safer) during the holidays. Without struggling and putting any holiday debt on a credit card for family presents.
I will share many of my banking and finance experiences with you along the way. We will keep it a simple process to help with our military family lifestyle!
